Sun Spice is a Japanese spice manufacturer founded in Osaka in March 1959 as Kabushiki Kaisha Sun Spice. The company was the first in the industry to establish sterilization technology for natural spices, supplying low-bacteria natural spices to the processed food industry.[1]

Design and History

In 1973, Sun Spice came under the umbrella of Kanegafuchi Chemical Industry (now Kaneka Corporation) and changed its name to Kaneka Sun Spice, a name it retains today.[1] The company’s corporate philosophy describes spices as “gifts of the sun and the earth,” a concept that aligns with the brand’s sun-related name.[1]

Despite claims that the Sun Spice logo was designed by Japanese graphic designer Koji Kato in the 1960s, no verifiable source has been found to confirm this attribution. Koji Kato (加藤孝司) was an active Japanese graphic designer known for silkscreen poster work, with pieces held in the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, and he was invited to serve as a juror for the Japan Advertising Artists Club (日宣美) and the Osaka Expo design competition.[2] However, no documentation connects him to a Sun Spice logo commission.

Meaning and Symbolism

The company’s stated philosophy references spices as gifts of the sun and the earth, which provides context for the “Sun” in the brand name.[1] Beyond this corporate statement, no documented symbolism for a specific Sun Spice logo mark has been located in available sources.

It is worth noting that the name “Sun Spice” should not be confused with S&B Foods (エスビー食品), a separate Japanese spice company whose “S&B” mark derives from “SUN” (sun) and “BIRD,” based on a 1930 trademark featuring a stylized sun and bird.[3] The two companies are unrelated.

Publicly available evidence about the Sun Spice visual identity is limited. The company’s official website does not display a prominent historical logo or provide design documentation. Without a primary source showing the mark, its designer, or its construction, the specific visual details of the original or current Sun Spice logo cannot be reliably described.
