Södahl is a Danish home textile brand founded in 1963 by designer and artist Hans Jürgen Schöbel, with the mission of developing home products featuring beautiful patterns in high-quality textiles that could be mixed and matched.[1] The brand is known for its Scandinavian design approach, combining simplicity with quality and timeless aesthetics.[2]
Design and History
Södahl was established in 1963 in the Danish town of Viborg by Schöbel, who was both a designer and an artist.[3] The brand’s early graphic patterns, including the forget-me-not flower motif from the 1960s, helped establish Södahl’s reputation in Europe and North America, growing the company from a small family-run business into one of Europe’s leading providers of lifestyle products for the home.[4]
In 2023, to mark its 60th anniversary, Södahl relaunched the forget-me-not pattern under the name “Forget-me-not,” reviving the graphic design with its tiny forget-me-not flowers that originally dated back to the 1960s.[4]
The Södahl logo functions primarily as a wordmark. On current products, such as towels from the Comfort collection, the logo appears as discreet lettering woven into or adorning the textile.[5] Vintage items from the brand also carry a logo mark, with some pieces featuring an attribution mark identifying the manufacturer.[6]
Meaning and Symbolism
Documented symbolism for the Södahl logo itself is limited. However, the brand’s identity is closely tied to its founder’s artistic background and the graphic patterns he created. The forget-me-not motif, which became a major breakthrough for the brand internationally, is described as a “unique flower pattern in genuine retro style” that helped put Södahl on the map within home design.[4] The brand’s stated mission emphasizes that “exciting design goes hand in hand with good quality and high functionality,” a concept that remains central to the Södahl identity.[1]
