Ably Medical is a Norwegian healthcare technology company founded in 2016 and headquartered in Oslo, with roots in Ålesund. The company develops contactless patient monitoring solutions, including its flagship product LYNG, a sensor mat placed under the mattress that tracks movement, presence, and bed exit events in nursing homes and home care settings.[1][2]
Design and History
Ably Medical’s visual identity was created by the Oslo-based design agency Heydays, working with type designer Miles Newlyn. The identity was introduced around 2020, when the company was developing its original hero product, the Ably bed, a hospital bed built from several independently moving spine-like springs designed to ease patient repositioning and pressure point control.[3]
The logo is directly inspired by the bed itself. Its smooth curves represent the product’s technologically advanced springs, while the background pattern symbolizes the collection of data from pressure points, organic movement, and the warm touch of a helping hand.[3]
An earlier trademark filing from October 2017 describes a mark consisting of the wording “ABLY” in black with a wavy line in purple to the left of the wording, with both black and purple claimed as features of the mark.[4]
Meaning and Symbolism
The logo’s curved forms reference the mechanical innovation of the Ably bed’s spring system, translating a functional engineering feature into a visual motif. The accompanying background pattern extends this concept, representing both the data gathered from pressure points across the bed surface and the human element of care through the suggestion of organic movement and a helping hand.[3]
Typography and Design
The identity uses the typeface Karelia Regular, which also serves as the wordmark in a modified version by Miles Newlyn. Karelia is additionally used for subtitles in brand video content directed by Preben W. Hansen.[5]
Heydays, the agency behind the identity, lists Ably Medical among its client projects.[6]
