Zocdoc is an online healthcare marketplace that lets patients find in-network providers, read reviews and book appointments in real time. The company, founded in 2007, underwent its first major visual redesign in February 2016, replacing a logo it had purchased for $80 with a new identity developed by the international brand consultancy Wolff Olins.[1][2]
Design and History
Zocdoc’s original logo, used from the company’s 2007 launch until 2016, was a two-tone Helvetica wordmark purchased from an online logo store for $80.[2] The mark featured blue-on-grey lettering with the name styled as “ZocDoc” using a capital D.[2][3]
In 2015, Zocdoc decided it was time for a rebrand and commissioned Wolff Olins to reimagine its overall look and feel.[4] The new identity launched on February 16, 2016, and included a logo, website, app and marketing materials.[5] Along with the visual change, the company dropped the capital D from its name, formerly written as “ZocDoc,” and adopted the lowercase “zocdoc” styling.[3][2]
Zocdoc’s CEO and cofounder Oliver Kharraz described the rebrand as the company’s first major redesign since it started eight years earlier, noting that the new branding “challenges the conventions of healthcare” with a bright, optimistic yellow and a dynamic logo.[1]
Meaning and Symbolism
The centerpiece of the new identity is Zee, an anthropomorphic logo that combines the letter Z with a human face.[6] Zee is a line drawing of a dynamic letter Z with two eyes, designed to evoke an “always-changing patient face.”[7] In its resting pose, Zee appears friendly and warm, but the logo can be adapted to show different expressions, including cheeky (with a smile and a wink), indifferent (with a zigzag mouth and downturned eyes) or puzzled (with an S-shaped mouth and open eyes).[7]
Wolff Olins’ stated goal was to create an identity “emphasizing the brand’s core attributes: simple, smart and caring,” a deliberate contrast to the typically impersonal experience patients often have in healthcare settings.[5] The bright yellow coloring was chosen as a vivid departure from the uninviting, corporate demeanor common in the healthcare industry.[8]
Typography and Design
The 2016 redesign used Sharp Sans Display No.1 across the brand’s digital and print materials, according to Sharp Type, the type foundry that produces the font family.[9] The wordmark itself appears in lowercase letters, a change from the previous identity’s capital D.[2]
In 2024, Zocdoc expanded its brand toolkit beyond the visual identity by partnering with the sonic branding agency Made Music Studio to create its first sonic logo.[10] The two-second audio mark, nicknamed “The Little Victory,” was designed as a musical expression of momentum, triumph and accomplishment, capturing the feeling patients get when they find and book an appointment.[10] The sonic logo ends with a split-second “wink” that echoes the visual Zee logo’s expressive capabilities.[11] It launched as part of Zocdoc’s 2025 national TV advertising campaign, “You’ve Got Options,” produced with creative agency 72andSunny.[10]
