Atrius Health is a large multi-specialty medical group based in Newton, Massachusetts, serving patients across eastern Massachusetts. The organization’s visual identity centers on a wordmark logo that has evolved alongside the group’s corporate structure and ownership changes.

Design and History

Atrius Health traces its origins to 2004, when several independent medical groups, including Dedham Medical Associates and Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates, formed an affiliation originally called Health One Care System. In 2006, the name of this affiliation was changed to Atrius Health. In 2015, the group reorganized, and Dedham Medical Associates, Granite Medical Group, and Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates merged to form one large healthcare system. PMG Physician Associates joined in 2017.[1]

The organization has used the Atrius Health name and logo since 2015, when it first became a single healthcare system. In 2023, the logo artwork was updated to include the words “Part of Optum” under the Atrius Health name, visually denoting the organization’s acquisition by Optum the previous year.[2] Atrius Health is now part of Optum, a health services company.[3]

A trademark application for the word mark “ATRIUS HEALTH” was filed with the USPTO on March 13, 2007, by the original applicant HealthOne Care System, Inc., with ownership later assigned to Atrius Health, Inc. The mark was registered as a standard character mark (drawing code 4000), meaning it protected the words themselves rather than a specific stylized design. The application was ultimately abandoned in August 2011 for failure to file a statement of use.[4][5]

Meaning and Symbolism

According to Atrius Health, the word “Atrius” was created to represent the ideals the organization stands for and the quality of its care. The name is derived by combining the words “Atrium” and “Radius.” “Atrium” refers to an open central courtyard or dedicated special space, while “Radius” defines a circle or sphere or a measure of range of activity or influence. The organization describes Atrius Health as “a warm, welcoming space defined by the relationship between our patients, who are at the center, and the physicians and medical teams who care for them.”[3]

In 2016, Atrius Health selected Boston-based branding and design agency Proverb as its design agency of record following a review of regional agencies.[6] Proverb developed the “Care. About You.” advertising campaign for the organization, which was designed to raise awareness of Atrius Health as a unified master brand after integrating its legacy groups.[7] The campaign was recognized with an award at the eHealthcare Leadership Awards in 2017.[8]
