The University of Utah Medical Center, which opened in 1965 as the clinical home of the University of Utah School of Medicine, has undergone several distinct visual identities over the decades. The facility itself was originally constructed as the University of Utah Medical Center, with University Hospital occupying its north wing.[1] The institution later became known as University Hospital and, in 2005, was rebranded under the University Health Care umbrella before adopting its current identity as University of Utah Health in 2017.[2]
Design and History
The earliest documented emblem associated with the University of Utah’s medical school was designed by Julian Maack, though this mark predates the Medical Center’s 1965 opening and served the School of Medicine rather than the hospital complex.[3]
In July 2005, University Hospital unveiled a new name and logo as part of a broader consolidation under the University Health Care identity. The new mark was introduced on the north tower of University Hospital, which served as the flagship facility for the newly unified brand. According to a university announcement, the new identity was designed to replace more than 60 separate logos and names then in use across the health system.[2]
The most significant visual change came in March 2017, when University of Utah Health introduced a new name and logo. The previous mark, described as a “Rounded U” with a caduceus, was retired in favor of the university’s well-known “Block U” containing a DNA double helix.[4] The rebrand unified patient care, research and education under a single identity, replacing the separate University of Utah Health Care and Health Sciences brands.[5]
Meaning and Symbolism
The 2017 logo was designed to convey two central ideas. First, by adopting the university’s “Block U” master brand, the health system signaled that its programs are an integral part of the University of Utah rather than a separate entity. Second, the DNA double helix inside the U was intended to illustrate the university’s leadership role in science and its commitment to treating each patient as a unique individual, from patient care to genetic research.[5] The brand book for the 2017 launch similarly states that the DNA helix was incorporated “to show our commitment to treat every person as a unique individual.”[4]
Typography and Design
University of Utah Health’s current brand guidelines specify that the logo consists of two fixed elements: the “U helix” graphic and the logotype, which must retain their relationship to one another. The logo is to be applied in solid University red, with 90% black or solid white permitted where necessary. Service lines and department names are typeset in the Sofia Pro typeface family, using Sofia Pro Medium for emphasis.[6]
