Billings Clinic is a not-for-profit, physician-led health care organization based in Billings, Montana, serving patients across Montana, northern Wyoming and the western Dakotas. Its visual identity has evolved alongside a series of organizational name changes and, most recently, a system-wide consolidation with Logan Health.
Design and History
The current Billings Clinic logo is a wordmark accompanied by a stylized graphic mark. The organization’s official history page documents the key naming milestones that shaped its identity: Billings Deaconess Hospital changed its name to Deaconess Medical Center, and in 1993 the Billings Clinic and Deaconess Medical Center merged to become Deaconess Billings Clinic. In 2005, the organization changed its name to Billings Clinic. [1]
A registered trademark for Billings Clinic, filed in 2007 and registered in 2008, describes the mark as “a stylized banner with elements of horizon, sky, and mountain landscape.” The trademark filing notes that color was not claimed as a feature of the mark at that time. [2]
In September 2023, Billings Clinic and Logan Health officially combined into a single, independent health system. [3] The combined organization operates under the name Billings Clinic, with the system’s website identifying it as “Billings Clinic – Logan Health.” [4]
According to Billings Clinic-Logan Health Co-CEO Kevin Abel, the consolidation process will eventually include a name rebranding by 2026. [5] This indicates that the current identity may be transitional as the unified health system develops its long-term branding.
Meaning and Symbolism
The trademark registration provides the only documented description of the Billings Clinic logo’s visual elements. The mark consists of “a stylized banner with elements of horizon, sky, and mountain landscape,” imagery that reflects the geographic setting of the organization’s service area in the Northern Rockies region. [2]
Claims about color psychology or abstract design concepts are not supported by available primary evidence.
Typography and Design
The trademark filing describes the overall mark but does not identify typography or design attribution. [2]
Given the planned rebranding by 2026, the current visual identity may be subject to further changes as the Billings Clinic and Logan Health integration progresses. [5]
