Genesee Health System (GHS) is the public mental health provider for Genesee County, Michigan, serving the community since 1962. The organization was formerly known as Genesee County Community Mental Health (CMH) before adopting its current name in 2013. Its visual identity has evolved through two documented rebranding efforts, most recently in 2023.
Design and History
Genesee County Community Mental Health officially became Genesee Health System on March 20, 2013. The name change was driven by the organization’s shift toward a holistic approach to care, encompassing not only mental health services but also substance abuse treatment, physical health and overall well-being. CEO Danis Russell explained that the agency treats “the whole person,” not just mental health concerns. The rebrand accompanied the agency’s transition from a county department to an independent authority on January 1, 2013. [1]
The 2013 rebrand introduced a new logo and the slogan “Hope and health in the community.” The mark used green and blue, with green representing life and vitality and blue representing stability and strength. [2]
In April 2023, GHS launched a two-year multimedia campaign called “Help is Here,” developed with the agency King Media. The campaign unveiled revitalized GHS branding intended to serve as the foundation for the agency’s marketing efforts. The objectives included revitalizing the brand identity, boosting community awareness and education, and attracting qualified professionals to open positions. [3]
Meaning and Symbolism
The 2013 logo’s color palette carried explicit meaning: green symbolized life and vitality, while blue symbolized stability and strength. The accompanying slogan, “Hope and health in the community,” reinforced the organization’s community-focused mission. [2]
Details about the symbolism of the 2023 revitalized branding have not been publicly documented beyond the campaign’s stated purpose of refreshing the agency’s identity to support broader awareness and recruitment efforts. [3]
