OCULUS Surgical, Inc. is the surgical-instrument subsidiary of OCULUS Optikgeräte GmbH, founded in April 2012 in Florida to provide direct distribution of the parent company’s retinal and vitreoretinal surgical tools across the Americas.[1] The parent company, headquartered in Wetzlar, Germany, develops ophthalmic equipment and formed OCULUS Surgical to serve its U.S. and Latin American markets.[2]
Design and History
OCULUS Surgical operates as a wholly owned subsidiary of OCULUS Optikgeräte GmbH and uses the parent company’s visual identity rather than a separate mark.[3] The OCULUS logo dates to 1957, when the company adopted the mark that remains in use today.[4] The parent company itself traces its origins to 1895, when Alois Mager founded the “A. Mager Spezialfabrik Ophthalmologischer Instrumente” in Berlin.[5]
The 1957 logo introduction coincided with the beginning of OCULUS’s cooperation with the Universitäts-Augenklinik Tübingen, a partnership that shaped the company’s development of ophthalmic instruments.[5] The OCULUS wordmark and device have been registered as a trademark by OCULUS Optikgeräte GmbH.[6]
Meaning and Symbolism
The company name derives from the Latin word “oculus,” meaning eye, reflecting the firm’s focus on ophthalmic instruments and eye diagnostics. The logo’s long-standing use since 1957 signals continuity for a company whose product line includes ophthalmoscopes, slit lamps, perimeters and other optometric instruments.[6]
