Grupos Aquas is a members club brand from Spain whose symbol was originally designed by Enric Huguet in 1973.[1] The mark is catalogued among Huguet’s branding work as “Grupo Aguas,” described as a unifying emblem for the different subsidiary companies of the Sociedad de Aguas de Barcelona (Agbar).[2]
Design and History
Enric Huguet was a pioneering Spanish graphic designer whose clients included Aguas de Barcelona, Roca, Santiveri, Autopistas CESA and the International Olympic Committee.[3] His portfolio for the Sociedad General de Aguas de Barcelona spans several decades, beginning with a distinctive mark used in the company’s scientific publications in 1964 and continuing with the Grupo Aguas unifying emblem created in 1973.[2]
The 1973 Grupo Aguas emblem was designed to bring visual coherence to the various subsidiary companies operating under the Aguas de Barcelona umbrella.[2] The logo database entry for Grupos Aquas lists the mark among rounded, swirl and outline logo styles, though it does not provide a detailed visual description of the symbol itself.[1]
Huguet’s broader work for Aguas de Barcelona is well documented. His portfolio includes matchbox designs for the company from 1971, covers for the company’s “Agua” magazine during the 1960s and 1970s, and a 1963 publication for the Sociedad General de Aguas de Barcelona.[4] The Disseny Hub Barcelona archive also confirms that Huguet carried out corporate image work for Aguas de Barcelona among other major companies.[5]
Later, during Spain’s political transition, the Corporación Financiera Agbar underwent a rebranding. According to Huguet’s own notes, the word “Financiera” was removed from the company name and the old heraldic-institutional shield was replaced with “a young and carefree symbol.”[2] Huguet also documented that a more common design proposal was not chosen to represent Corporación Agbar.[2]
Meaning and Symbolism
Huguet’s own description of the Grupo Aguas emblem identifies its function as a unifying mark for the different subsidiary companies of the Sociedad de Aguas de Barcelona.[2] No documented account of specific symbolic elements within the 1973 mark itself has been located in the available research sources.
