Assurant, Inc. is a specialty insurance and risk management provider headquartered in New York City. The company’s visual identity was created in 2004 when it separated from its European parent, Fortis Insurance N.V., and launched as an independent public company on the New York Stock Exchange.[1]
Design and History
The Assurant logo was introduced on March 1, 2004, alongside a national advertising campaign announcing the company’s new name and brand identity. The name change from Fortis, Inc. to Assurant, Inc. occurred in connection with the company’s February 5, 2004 initial public offering.[1]
The logo was developed by Carbone Smolan Agency, a New York City-based design firm, working with an in-house team of Assurant employees. Ken Carbone, Partner at Carbone Smolan Agency, noted that the collaboration allowed the firm to “weave the core strengths of the four business units into a campaign that supports the Assurant story.”[1] The design firm also created the accompanying advertising campaign, which promoted the company’s promise to “bring clarity to complexity.”[1]
According to the company’s official press release, the new logo is “comprised of three brightly colored and tightly woven threads” that represent the integration of three core capabilities: risk management expertise, customized technology, and long-term client partnerships.[1]
The name “Assurant” was already in use within the Fortis organization prior to the spin-off. A unit called the “Assurant Group” had been created in 1999 to house smaller Fortis acquisitions, and this name was adopted for the newly independent company.[2]
Meaning and Symbolism
The Assurant logo’s weave symbol is documented in the company’s trademark registration. The mark consists of the word “ASSURANT” in grey underneath a circle containing six stripes, two each of blue, green, and gold, superimposed over a stylized white triangle.[3] The official trademark filing claims blue, green, gold, and grey as features of the mark.[3]
The company’s visual guidelines describe the preferred version of the logo as the “primary four-color version,” composed of the corporate blue, orange, and green weave symbol with a grey wordmark on a white background.[4]
Typography and Design
The Assurant wordmark appears in lowercase grey lettering beneath the circular weave symbol, as documented in the trademark registration.[3] The company’s visual guidelines specify that the logo is the combination of the weave symbol and the wordmark, and that only official logo artwork should be used.[4]
The logo has remained consistent since its 2004 introduction, with the weave symbol and wordmark continuing to serve as the company’s primary identity.
