Beazley is a London-based specialist insurer founded in 1986, operating across Europe, the US, Asia and Australia. Its visual identity is built around a distinctive pink wordmark and continuous line-drawing illustrations, a look that has evolved through two documented rebrands while retaining its core elements.
Design and History
In 2008, Beazley replaced its existing logo with a line drawing of the company name, created by London design firm Williams Murray Hamm. The identity was built around a continuous “pencil” line that formed the Beazley logotype, with team-specific illustrations, such as scales of justice for the lawyers professional liability division, drawn from the same single line and connecting to the main logo. The line drawings were intended to symbolize Beazley’s creativity and to create a more prominent sub-brand identity for its underwriting and claims teams while making clear they were all part of Beazley. The company retained its “Beazley pink” shade from prior branding for accents and promotional purposes.[1][2]
In late 2022, Beazley unveiled a refreshed identity developed with Prophet, a global brand consultancy. According to Beazley’s chief marketing officer, Georgina Peters-Venzano, the logo change was “an evolution, not a revolution,” continuing to pay homage to the company’s founding fathers while being brought up to date. The line drawings were evolved to convey more energy and personality through the introduction of perspective, a looseness in application and a moving line intended to engage the viewer.[3] Prophet’s case study confirms the agency modernized Beazley’s brand expression, working with a renowned illustrator to infuse the “iconic pencil line” with new expressive fluidity and motion.[4] The illustrator was Paul Wearing, who was selected through a pitch directed by Prophet.[5]
A US trademark application filed by Beazley PLC in February 2023 describes the mark as consisting of the word “beazley” in stylized font, underlined with a line of decreasing thickness as it moves from the “b” to the “y.”[6]
Meaning and Symbolism
Beazley’s French-language brand interview notes that its visual identity has long stood out in the insurance sector with its bright pink and its “perfectly recognizable play of black lines,” representing the company’s strong and unique culture.[7] The 2022 refresh kept the pink deliberately, with Peters-Venzano explaining that the strength of the brand’s unique colors and illustrations helped it stand out in its market, so these visual indicators were enhanced with a modern twist to work better across digital channels.[3]
The bowler hat has also become a recurring brand element. Prophet’s press release notes that Beazley’s story began with “two chairs and a hat stand” and that the “iconic bowler hat” has been a core part of the company’s identity, described by Beazley’s CMO as “humble, quirky and full of ambition.”[8]
Typography and Design
The current Beazley wordmark is rendered in a stylized font, as documented in the trademark filing, with the distinctive underlining line decreasing in thickness from the first to the last letter.[6] Prophet’s work on the 2022 refresh intensified the signature pink, described as “supercharging it for all digital uses,” and re-energized the insurer’s verbal expression with spirited copy and playful typography.[4]
