Lemonade is a digital insurance company founded in 2015 that sells renters, homeowners, pet, car, and life insurance through an app-based, AI-driven platform. The company’s visual identity is built around a distinctive pink color that has been part of its branding since launch, a choice that set it apart from traditional insurers and later became the subject of a notable international trademark dispute.

Design and History

Lemonade’s brand identity relies on the color pink, which the company says has been part of its identity since it launched in 2015. The company uses pink in some variations of its logo and on its website.[1] The specific shade, identified by the hex code #FF0083, is central to the brand’s marketing, including an Instagram campaign featuring everyday objects dunked into pink paint.[2]

The company’s early brand approach was described in its own launch materials as “white, hollow line art, big text, plain English, clear call to action.”[3] This minimal, direct style was paired with the unconventional pink palette to help the startup stand out in a crowded insurance technology market.[4]

In June 2019, shortly after Lemonade launched in Germany, Deutsche Telekom, the parent company of T-Mobile, obtained a preliminary injunction requiring Lemonade to remove pink from all its German assets, claiming the color infringed on its magenta trademark. Lemonade complied temporarily but refused to sign Deutsche Telekom’s agreement, choosing instead to challenge the telecom’s claim across jurisdictions under the hashtag #FreeThePink.[1] In December 2020, a French court ruled in Lemonade’s favor, finding no evidence of genuine use of Deutsche Telekom’s color mark for financial services and depriving the telecom of its rights in that field.[2]

Meaning and Symbolism

Lemonade’s use of pink was a deliberate departure from the visual conventions of the insurance industry. The company’s leadership argued that when it comes to insurance, no brand in the world is more closely connected with the color pink than Lemonade.[5] The brand’s unconventional color choice was paired with a business model that takes a flat fee from premiums and donates unclaimed money to charities, a structure that allowed the company to be “authentically crazy” with its branding because its business model was unique as well.[4]

Typography and Design

Lemonade’s early brand identity was described by the company itself as featuring “white, hollow line art” and “big text,” suggesting a wordmark-based logo with a simple, open aesthetic rather than a complex symbol.[3] The company’s brand colors, as tracked by brand asset databases, include the signature pink #FF0083 alongside a dark neutral tone.[6] No specific typeface or designer attribution for the logo has been publicly documented in available sources.
