Meridional Companhia de Seguros

Meridional Companhia de Seguros was a Brazilian insurance company tied to the Banco Meridional do Brasil group. It was established in Porto Alegre in 1966, with additional branches opened in Curitiba in 1974.

Meridional Companhia de Seguros was a Brazilian insurance company tied to the Banco Meridional do Brasil group. The firm operated under the name “Meridional” Companhia de Seguros Gerais, a change approved in 1954 from its earlier designation as “A Meridional” Companhia de Seguros de Acidentes do Trabalho, which had been authorized to function since 1936.[1] By 1988, the company was formally recognized as a subsidiary of Banco Meridional do Brasil S.A.[2]

Design and History

Documented visual evidence for the Meridional Companhia de Seguros logo is scarce in accessible archives. The company’s corporate records confirm its existence and structure but do not describe its visual identity in detail. A Brazilian government decree from 1987 and another from 1988 reference the company’s capital increases but contain no description of its logo or branding.[3][2]

Claims that the logo was designed in the 1960s by Joaquim Redig cannot be verified through available sources. Redig’s published curriculum lists his commercial and institutional marks, including Construtora Queiroz Galvão (1967), Tecidos Nova América (1968), Empetur (1968) and Fepasa (1976), but does not mention Meridional Companhia de Seguros among them.[4] Searches of Redig’s professional biography and project lists yield no reference to this insurance company.[5]

The company’s corporate registration indicates it was established in Porto Alegre in 1966, with additional branches opened in Curitiba in 1974 and elsewhere in 1976.[6][7] In 1997, the Brazilian government declared its interest in allowing foreign participation of up to one hundred percent in Banco Meridional do Brasil and its controlled companies, including Meridional Companhia de Seguros Gerais.[8]

Meaning and Symbolism

The company’s CNPJ records show its registration status as “baixada” (closed), indicating the firm is no longer active.[9]
