Minnesota Mutual Life Insurance Company, founded in St. Paul in 1880, operated under that name for over a century before transitioning through several corporate identities. The company’s visual identity evolved alongside these changes, with its most notable mark designed in 1977.
Design and History
In 1977, graphic designer Peter Seitz, working with Hideki Yamamoto, designed a new logo for Minnesota Mutual Life. Seitz was a pioneering figure in Twin Cities design, having served as the first design director at the Walker Art Center and co-founding the interdisciplinary firm InterDesign. The 1977 mark is documented in Design Observer’s retrospective of Seitz’s work, which lists it among his notable logo commissions from that period.[1]
The logo’s design portion consisted of the stylized letters “MM,” as recorded in the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office registration for the MINNESOTA MUTUAL LIFE word mark and design. The trademark, filed in August 1987 and registered in 1988 under registration number 1500767, described the mark as featuring “the stylized letters ‘MM'” alongside the words “MUTUAL LIFE.”[2]
The company underwent significant naming changes in the decades that followed. In 1998, Minnesota Mutual Life Insurance Company changed its name to Minnesota Life Insurance Company.[3] The parent holding company adopted the Securian name around the same period, and by 2018 the organization rebranded as Securian Financial, unveiling a new logo and identity system as part of a national advertising campaign.[4]
Meaning and Symbolism
The 2018 Securian Financial logo, which replaced the earlier marks, was designed by the Minneapolis agency Little & Company. According to Joe Cecere, the agency’s president and chief creative officer, the new logo “was designed to be appealing, friendly and approachable to a consumer audience. It represents unity, diversity, continuity and the coming together of loved ones.”[5] This rebrand affected the logo used for Minnesota Life, the insurance underwriting subsidiary, though the Minnesota Life name itself did not change.[6]
For the earlier 1977 Minnesota Mutual Life mark, no documented symbolism beyond the stylized “MM” monogram has been preserved in the available trademark records or design retrospectives. The mark’s meaning appears to have been primarily monogrammatic, tying the visual identity directly to the company’s initials.
Typography and Design
The 1977 logo paired the stylized “MM” device with the company name in a straightforward wordmark arrangement. The trademark registration indicates that the words “MUTUAL LIFE” appeared as part of the mark, with the stylized letters forming the design element.[2] Specific typeface choices for the 1977 mark are not documented in available sources.
The 2018 Securian Financial identity, created by Little & Company, introduced an entirely new logo and identity system as part of a broader brand platform that included a new brand promise and target customer mindset.[5]
