Jardine Lloyd Thompson Group plc, commonly known as JLT Group or simply JLT, was a British multinational insurance and reinsurance brokerage headquartered in London. The company was acquired by Marsh & McLennan Companies in April 2019 for $5.6 billion in fully diluted equity value.[1]
Design and History
In July 2009, the company launched a new brand that removed the full firm name “Jardine Lloyd Thompson” from the wordmark, leaving simply the acronym JLT alongside an evolution of the pyramid device.[2] The pyramid device had been a recurring element in the company’s visual identity prior to this refresh.
The image trademark registered by Jardine Lloyd Thompson Group Plc describes the mark as “a stylized triangle consisting of a maze-like design with a smaller interior triangle.”[3] This geometric device served as the company’s primary symbol during its final decade as an independent firm.
Following the acquisition, Marsh & McLennan announced in March 2021 that it was simplifying its name and rebranding with a new logo described as an abstract infinity symbol.[4] As part of this rebrand, Marsh JLT Specialty became Marsh Specialty, and the JLT brand was retired from the group’s business names.[4]
Meaning and Symbolism
Documented symbolism for the JLT pyramid device is limited. The trademark registration describes the mark’s appearance but does not attribute a specific meaning to the maze-like triangle design.[3] The 2009 rebrand was described as an “evolution of the pyramid device,” indicating continuity with earlier branding rather than a departure from it.[2]
