GoDaddy Inc., the domain registrar and web hosting company, introduced its current logo, called “the GO,” on January 14, 2020. The mark is an interlocking “G” and “O” that forms a heart-like shape, replacing the cartoon mascot head that had identified the brand for more than two decades. The company described the new logo as a “joyful reflection” of how GoDaddy celebrates everyday entrepreneurs. [1]
Design and History
GoDaddy’s original logo featured a cartoon character head, affectionately referred to as “The Head,” which served as the brand’s identifier for over two decades. [2] In 2018, GoDaddy removed the cartoon icon from its website and operated without a logo, relying solely on its wordmark. [3]
The 2020 rebrand marked the company’s first logo change in over two decades. The new mark was created by GoDaddy’s internal design team in collaboration with external branding firms Codo and Lippincott. [3] The Verge noted that the logo was designed in collaboration with branding firms Lippincott and Codo. [4] Fast Company reported the shape was a joint effort between GoDaddy’s own design team and two outside branding firms, Lippincott and Koto. [5]
GoDaddy Chief Brand Officer Cameron Scott said of the new mark: “The GO says to our community that they can stand on their own two feet and go do what they love. When entrepreneurs see the GO, they know they have someone standing in their corner, championing their every step along the way, to turn their ideas into reality.” [1]
Meaning and Symbolism
GoDaddy’s official description of the GO states: “The GO’s swooping arcs represent the indomitable spirit of everyday entrepreneurs. And the word ‘go’ itself is GoDaddy’s rallying cry for folks to take the first or next step in their entrepreneurial journey.” [6]
Ad Age reported that the logo is a “curvy, heart-shaped symbol meant to express the entrepreneurial spirit of its customers,” and that it is also the overlapping letters “G” and “O,” set at 32-degree angles. [2]
GoDaddy Chief Marketing Officer Fara Howard described the brand as standing “for inclusive entrepreneurship and helping anyone who wants to change how they work and live for the better by bringing their ideas to life online.” [1]
Typography and Design
The GO logomark consists of an overlapping, angled, oval-shaped “G” and “O.” [5] The Verge described the overall identity as “a generic, sans-serif type accompanied by a heart shape.” [4] Creative Bloq characterized the design as “an interlocking G and O” with “a friendly, curvy heart-like shape and minimal noise.” [3]
Along with the new logo, GoDaddy launched a new website and new advertising campaigns featuring real-life GoDaddy users telling their stories. [3]
