Docenave Navegação was the shipping arm of the Brazilian mining company Companhia Vale do Rio Doce (CVRD). Founded in 1962 as Navegação Vale do Rio Doce S.A., the company operated under the name Docenave for decades before its corporate name was changed to Log-In Logística Intermodal S/A in 2007.[1][2]
Design and History
The Docenave mark was designed in 1967 by Brazilian graphic designer Aloísio Magalhães, a pioneer of modern graphic design in Brazil.[3][4] Magalhães founded the design office M+N+P in 1960 with Luiz Fernando Noronha and Artur Lício Pontual, which later became PVDI (Programação Visual Desenho Industrial).[5] The Docenave symbol was created at PVDI in the same year.[6]
Magalhães also designed the Vale do Rio Doce mark in 1967, the same year as the Docenave logo.[4] The two marks were part of a broader visual identity program for the CVRD group during the 1960s.
In 2007, the company’s corporate name was changed from Navegação Vale do Rio Doce S/A (Docenave) to Log-In Logística Intermodal S/A, following a restructuring of Vale’s intermodal shipping business.[2][7] The Docenave name and its associated visual identity were retired as part of this transition.
Meaning and Symbolism
Documented descriptions of the Docenave symbol’s specific meaning are limited. The mark was used on the company’s house flag, which Loughran (1979) describes as a horizontal bright blue-grey-bright blue flag with a white symbol in the center.[1] The flag design confirms the symbol was rendered in white against a blue field, consistent with maritime identification practices for shipping companies.
