The Shipping Guru is a Finnish consultancy specializing in ship-broking and sea logistics. Its visual identity was developed in 2011 by Werklig, a Helsinki-based brand development agency, and was publicly reviewed by design publication BP&O in June of that year.[1]
Design and History
The identity created by Werklig blends a clear maritime sensibility with an iconic “G” logo-mark.[1] The mark was noted by design critics for its clever use of rope imagery, with the highlights of the rope being balanced through the curves of the letterform.[1]
The project was described as a small branding effort that distilled a perceptibly large operation into a neat identity package.[1] The identity was also featured among BP&O’s top five brand identity projects of June 2011.[2]
Meaning and Symbolism
The “G” logo-mark incorporates a rope motif, reinforcing a mooring reference that ties the letterform to the maritime industry.[1] The rope aesthetic was carried through to collateral such as business cards, where it created a justified type layout drawing the eye to the curves of the mark.[1]
Typography and Design
The logo combines a solid serif letterform with the rope-based “G” mark. The serif was noted for reinforcing both the letter and the mooring reference, while the type choice balanced the modern simplicity of the mark with a classic and formal tone.[1] The business card application used a blue foil against an icy white background, a choice that was described as capturing a glistening azure sea.[1]
