Buzzi Unicem is an Italian cement and building materials manufacturer founded in 1907. Its corporate logo is a blue U-shaped pictogram with the company name at its centre, a mark that has remained consistent through the group’s major rebranding efforts.

Design and History

The current Buzzi Unicem logo was introduced in 2008 as part of an international rebranding operation that unified the group’s various corporate identities under a single visual system. The new mark was created from the visual union of the traditional Buzzi Unicem pictogram (the U) and the historic lettering of the Dyckerhoff logotype, a German subsidiary acquired by the group. The rebranding was launched with the presentation of the Dyckerhoff Consolidated Financial Statements in April 2008, and all group companies were expected to align with the new corporate identity by the end of that year while retaining their own legal names.[1]

In 2017, to mark the company’s 110th anniversary, Buzzi Unicem introduced a temporary graphic variation of its logotype. The text “110 YEARS” was inserted under the group’s name using the Catamaran light font, which the company described as clear and easy to read. The anniversary logo was used throughout 2017 on corporate publications including financial statements and the Portland magazine.[2]

In June 2023, the parent company changed its name from Buzzi Unicem to Buzzi. The company retained its blue U-shaped logo with the Buzzi name at its centre, and subsidiary names continued to appear in text alongside the logo.[3] The decision to keep the well-known pictogram was made to maintain continuity and recognizability among key stakeholders.[4] In Italy, the Buzzi Unicem name and brand were not subject to change and continued to identify the cement sector activities.[5]

Meaning and Symbolism

The 2008 logo was designed to express the union of two major industrial realities, Buzzi Unicem and Dyckerhoff. According to the group’s official rebranding publication, the U in the pictogram took on the new meaning of “union,” reinforced by the number one, whose form is perceptible within the graphic design. The number one was described as a newly highlighted synonym of business leadership.[6] The number “1” appearing on new Buzzi Unicem bags was also said to allude to the corporate target of achieving leadership in quality and technological innovation in the field of binders.[7]

Typography and Design

The corporate design program for the Buzzi Unicem group was developed by the German agency Heisters & Partner, which was commissioned with the visual integration of the entire group under one identity. The agency selected the Frutiger typeface as the group’s consistent font, in part because it was already in use by Dyckerhoff AG, one of the group’s largest holdings. Heisters & Partner also produced a 100-page multilingual brand manual and developed the group’s corporate communications, including annual and sustainability reports and the group’s website.[8]
