Cheddite Plastic

Cheddite Plastic was a Swiss manufacturer of plastic packaging and articles based in Liestal, in the canton of Basel-Country. A logo database credits the design of its symbol to Swiss graphic designer Walter Bosshardt in 1970.

Cheddite Plastic was a Swiss manufacturer of plastic packaging and articles, based in Liestal in the canton of Basel-Country. The company was founded on 31 December 1959 as Cheddite Plastik AG, with share capital held 20% by Nestlé and 80% by SSE Cheddite, the Swiss explosives company from which it took its name. In 1971, Cheddite Plastic AG took over the mold-making, fixed installations and consumables of Proplasto AG. The company was deleted from the Swiss commercial register in 2018. [1] [2]

Design and History

Documentation of the Cheddite Plastic visual identity is limited and partly conflicting. A logo database attributes the design of the Cheddite Plastic symbol to Swiss graphic designer Walter Bosshardt in 1970. [3] Bosshardt was born in Basle in 1918, studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Basle, and later opened his own graphic design studio in the city. [4]

Separately, the Museum für Gestaltung Zürich holds an undated sign or symbol for “Cheddite-Pastic S.A.” in its graphic collection, credited to Swiss designer Mark Zeugin (1930-2003). [5] Because the museum record is undated and its title contains a typographical variant of the company name, it is unclear whether this work represents the same mark attributed to Bosshardt or a separate design for the firm.

No official source describing the appearance, colors or typography of the Cheddite Plastic logo has been located. The company’s trademark records in the Swiss commercial register show no active or historical trademark data. [6]

Meaning and Symbolism

No documented account of the logo’s intended meaning or symbolism has been found in available sources. The company name derives from its parent, the Swiss explosives firm Cheddite (SSE Cheddite), which produced dynamite and later shotgun cartridges. [1]

Typography and Design

No verifiable information about the logo’s typography, construction or color palette is available from primary sources. Given the conflicting attributions and the absence of official documentation, any detailed description of the mark’s visual form would be speculative.
