Crystalex Novy Bor

Crystalex Nový Bor is a Czech glassmaking company, formerly Borské sklo and renamed Crystalex in 1974. It introduced a new logo in 2021 by the Prague studio Symbiont, its first rebranding in more than 50 years.

Crystalex Nový Bor is the Czech glassmaking company formerly known as Borské sklo, renamed Crystalex in 1974. Its visual identity has undergone two documented phases: a long-standing logo featuring decorative lettering with the oval blue-gold “Bohemia Crystal” trademark, and a 2021 redesign by the Prague studio Symbiont that introduced a new logotype and symbol.

Design and History

The company traces its corporate origins to 1945, when local glassmakers formed the national enterprise Borocrystal, which moved to its current production site in Nový Bor in 1967. In 1974, the company was renamed Crystalex, and the original logo and trademark first appeared around that time, roughly half a century before the 2021 rebranding.[1][2]

For decades, the Crystalex logo consisted of a decorative font paired with an oval blue-gold trademark reading “Bohemia Crystal.”[3] That mark was used on products, labels and company materials until the company decided it no longer met the demands of modern global trade, including e-commerce and social media communication.[3]

In 2021, Crystalex introduced a new logo and visual style created by the graphic design studio Symbiont, with design credited to Denisa Myšková, Michal Smejkal and Ondřej Lím.[4][2] The company described the change as its first rebranding in more than 50 years.[5]

Meaning and Symbolism

The new logo features a symbol described by the company as a “crystal crown,” a modern rendition of an element found in the earlier graphic form of the “Bohemia Crystal” trademark.[3] Symbiont describes the redesign as built on “the crystalline form of the ‘A'” and a revival of a pictogram from the brand’s original historical version.[4] The custom letter “A” was designed directly for Crystalex and, like the symbol above the text, evokes the sharp edges of crystal.[2]

Typography and Design

The 2021 identity uses the typeface Euclid Circular, as credited by Symbiont.[4] The earlier logo, by contrast, was described as using a decorative font paired with the oval “Bohemia Crystal” trademark.[3]
