DMM is a climbing and mountaineering hardware manufacturer based in Llanberis, North Wales, founded in 1981 as Moorhouse Engineering in Bethesda before moving to Llanberis in 1986 and becoming known as DMM.[1] The company produces carabiners, cams, ice axes and other safety equipment for both recreational climbers and industrial professionals, and remains the sole manufacturer of climbing hardware in the UK.[1]

Design and History

DMM’s visual identity underwent a significant redesign in a project led by the Welsh design agency Think, which was briefed to unify the company’s inconsistent B2B professional brand and B2C sports brand under one coherent look.[2] A key requirement of the brief was to retain the existing logo while emphasising that DMM’s gear is made in Wales.[2]

Think performed a “logo health check” on the existing mark and redesigned it “whilst keeping its essence,” producing what the agency calls the finished DMM Climbing logo.[2] The redesign extended beyond the logo itself to packaging, catalogues, advertising and posters, and the same logo treatment was transferred to the DMM Professional line to bring the entire brand under one style.[2]

Meaning and Symbolism

The DMM logo incorporates diagonal lines that the design agency describes as “the diagonals (or mountains) on the DMM,” which were repurposed as direction arrows and content dividers throughout the brand system to strengthen the identity.[2] The colour palette chosen for the redesign was “carefully selected” specifically to reinforce the Welsh aspect of the brand.[2]

Typography and Design

As part of the brand redesign, Think selected a typeface specifically chosen “to help mirror the logo,” ensuring the wordmark and supporting typography worked as a cohesive system.[2] The company’s slogan, “Climb Now Work Later,” appears alongside the logo on official merchandise.[3]
