Old National Bank is a regional financial institution headquartered in Evansville, Indiana, tracing its roots to 1834. The bank’s visual identity centers on a wordmark logo featuring the bank’s name in a clean, modern treatment, accompanied by a square symbol containing the year “1834” in stylized font.
Design and History
The current Old National Bank logo consists of the bank’s name in a straightforward wordmark. The bank also uses a standalone symbol: a square containing “1834” in stylized lettering, which serves as a secondary mark and is registered as a trademark for private banking services, personalized financial planning, and family financial asset management.[1]
The bank’s color palette combines a deep blue with a bright yellow accent. Brand asset listings document the yellow as “Lightning Yellow” with the hex code #FFC425.[2] The blue-and-yellow combination has been part of the bank’s public presence for over a decade; when Old National’s name was placed on the Murat Theatre in Indianapolis in 2010, the venue’s marquee featured the bank’s name in royal blue lettering, with the bank’s name, logo, and colors applied across entrance awnings, posters, and video screens.[3]
In 2022, Old National completed a merger with First Midwest Bank. The bank confirmed that First Midwest banking centers would be rebranded under the Old National name, with the logo and colors changing to match Old National’s identity.[4] The systems conversion and branding changes were completed during the third quarter of 2022.[5]
Following the merger, the bank chose to keep the Old National name rather than create a new one. Chief marketing officer Jim Stadler explained that the decision was made to lean into the strength of the existing brand, which had been in operation for over 190 years.[6]
Meaning and Symbolism
The “1834” square symbol directly references the bank’s founding year, anchoring the identity in its long institutional history. The bank’s marketing has leaned into this heritage: the “Get Old” campaign, launched after the 2022 merger, positions the bank’s age as an asset, with Stadler noting that customers seeking a bank want “strength, stability, longevity and comfort that they know what they’re doing.”[6]
Typography and Design
The logo uses simple, clean lettering for the bank’s name, with the “1834” mark set in a stylized font within a square.[1] The design is intentionally straightforward, described in trademark documentation as consisting of the year in stylized type inside a geometric shape.[1] The identity system extends beyond the logo itself; a branch design project in Indianapolis was noted as one of the first to use a new branded palette that would become the standard for Old National branches going forward.[7]
