Linificio e Canapificio Nazionale is an Italian textile manufacturer founded on 14 January 1873 by Andrea Ponti, who united several existing mills to produce and trade linen and hemp yarns and fabrics. The company, which became a Società Benefit in 2021, introduced a refreshed visual identity in 2023 to mark its 150th anniversary. The redesign updated the typography and colour treatment while preserving the core elements of the historic mark: the initials “L”, “C” and “N”, the founding year 1873, the oval crest and the company name. The company states that red, previously relegated to the background, became the predominant colour in the new logo to make it more recognisable. A special anniversary variant was also created, featuring a graphic rendering of the number 150 that evokes the yarns of an imaginary loom and the filaments of 3D design, referencing both the company’s history and its focus on innovation. The new logo has been used on all corporate material since 2023. [1]
Design and History
The original Linificio e Canapificio Nazionale logo is attributed to Italian architect, designer and graphic artist Silvio Coppola (1920-1985). The Fondazione Ragghianti, which holds Coppola’s archive, lists “lanificio e canapificio nazionale (1966)” among the logos he created for various companies between the 1960s and 1980s. [2] The Fondazione Ragghianti also names “Lanificio e Canapificio Nazionale” among the companies for which Coppola worked. [3] Coppola was a multifaceted designer active in editorial graphics, furniture design and corporate identity, and his works are held in permanent collections including the MoMA in New York. [4]
The 2023 refresh, announced by the company in February of that year, was described as a renewal of the visual identity projecting the brand toward the future with a fresher and more contemporary look. The update involved modernising the font and removing the band that encircled the crest, making the original elements clearer and easier to decipher. [1]
Meaning and Symbolism
The company’s official English translation of its name is “National Flax Mill and Hemp Mill”, reflecting its core business in flax (linen) and hemp processing. [5] The mark itself is described in USPTO trademark records as consisting of an overall oval with the wording “LINIFICIO E CANAPIFICIO NAZIONALE” inside the top band of the oval, which contains ten stripes. The bottom of the oval is a scrolled banner with the numerals “1873” inside, and in the centre are placed the stylised crossed letters “LCN”. [5] An international registration for the mark similarly describes it as consisting of the term “LINIFICIO E CANAPIFICIO NAZIONALE 1873” in special script, positioned in a substantially oval belt and combined with the stranded letters “LCN”. [6]
Typography and Design
Documented typographic details are limited to the company’s own description of its 2023 redesign. The company states that the font was updated as part of the refresh, and that the initials “L”, “C” and “N”, the year of foundation, the oval crest and the company name retained their innate elegance in the new graphic design. [1] No specific typeface name has been publicly documented for either the original or the updated logo.
