Mavic is a French cycling components and wheel manufacturer founded in 1889, known for its long association with professional road racing and its distinctive yellow branding. The company’s visual identity has undergone several documented changes over more than a century, with the current wordmark logo introduced in 2015.
Design and History
Mavic’s first logo and trademark appeared in 1923, registered at the International Union in Bern, Switzerland. This early mark was circular in form, a style popular in the 1920s, featuring a red border with lettering on a yellow field. In 1945, the company replaced the circular logo with a diamond-shaped emblem. A further change came in 1973, when the logo was updated to a diamond form within a red rounded rectangle, a design applied to Mavic’s neutral support vehicles at races. In 1988, Mavic adopted a yellow-background logo featuring the brand name in italic lettering on a parallelepiped shape, a design used on vehicles, catalogs and parts. The company changed its logo again in 1996, introducing an elliptical design with the MAVIC lettering enclosed in an ellipse. This mark was introduced to symbolize Mavic’s transition from a rim manufacturer to a brand producing complete wheel and tire systems. [1] [2] [3]
In July 2015, Mavic introduced a new visual identity, dropping the ellipse that had surrounded the brand name since 1996. The redesign followed a trademark infringement case in which Mavic successfully took legal action against sellers of counterfeit wheels in Poland. According to statements from Mavic’s parent company, the Salomon Group in Annecy, confusion among consumers about whether the standalone “M” or the full name was the authentic Mavic logo prompted the change. The company decided to use only one logo featuring the complete brand name, eliminating the standalone “M” mark. The classic Mavic yellow color was retained, but a new typeface was chosen for the wordmark. [4] [5] [3]
The new logo was rolled out on Mavic’s neutral service vehicles and motorcycles in autumn 2015. The removal of the ellipse and the stronger emphasis on the full brand name reflected Mavic’s position as a total cycling brand producing not only wheels and rims but also pedals, tires, helmets, apparel, gear and footwear. [6]
Meaning and Symbolism
The color yellow has been a consistent element of Mavic’s identity throughout its logo history. Yellow was introduced as a background color in the 1988 logo and has remained part of the brand’s visual identity since. The brand’s official yellow is Pantone 012C, as referenced in corporate identity guidelines. [2] [7]
The 1996 elliptical logo was specifically designed to symbolize Mavic’s shift from being a rim manufacturer to a brand producing complete wheel and tire systems. The ellipse was closely tied to wheels and rims, reflecting the company’s core product focus at that time. [3]
Typography and Design
The 2015 logo redesign introduced a new typeface for the MAVIC wordmark, replacing the lettering used in the previous elliptical logo. The standalone “M” symbol was discontinued in favor of the complete brand name. The yellow brand color was preserved in the new design. [4] [5]
Mavic’s corporate identity guidelines specify Helvetica Neue for typography and Pantone 012C for instances of 100% yellow, as documented in a 2014 anniversary project that followed the brand’s official design standards. [7]
