Modine Manufacturing Company, a thermal management specialist founded in Racine, Wisconsin in 1916, has used several corporate logos over its history. The company’s current identity centers on a stylized “M” mark paired with the Modine wordmark, a design that has evolved through documented corporate rebranding efforts since the late 1990s.
Design and History
In July 1999, Modine Manufacturing introduced a new corporate logo. The design incorporated a “cycle graphic” that was described as portraying heating and cooling cycles, with an orbit-like movement intended to suit a global market. The previous logo had been in use since 1964, and the company noted it had employed several different logos since its founding in 1916.[1]
That same year, Modine filed trademark applications for an “M and Design” mark, with applications dated July 7, 1999, and registrations granted in November 2000.[2] A separate “M” trademark application was filed on January 8, 1999, covering heat exchangers for automotive vehicles, including radiators and coolers.[3]
In July 2003, Modine announced a new corporate tagline, “Innovative Thermal Solutions,” which was integrated into the then-current company logo and incorporated into all sales and marketing materials as part of an effort to improve brand recognition.[4]
For its 100th anniversary in 2016, Modine created a commemorative graphic that paid homage to the company’s history while focusing on the future. The anniversary flag displayed the numerals 100 and the words “since 1916,” along with a new tagline, “Always Innovating. Always Improving.”[5]
Modine’s current corporate tagline, “Engineering a Cleaner, Healthier World,” appears on the company’s official website and was the subject of trademark filings beginning in April 2023.[6][7]
Meaning and Symbolism
The 1999 logo’s “cycle graphic” was explicitly designed to represent heating and cooling cycles, reflecting Modine’s core thermal management business. The orbit-like movement was described as appropriate for a company operating in a global market.[1]
An earlier “M” trademark registered by Modine, filed in 1965 for radiators, oil coolers, and air conditioners, was described in USPTO records as featuring two concentric circles, indicating a circular or orbital design element in the company’s mid-century mark.[8]
Typography and Design
Brand asset databases list Modine’s primary brand color as a blue tone with the hex code #0365B1, alongside a dark secondary color of #222222.[9] The current logo combines the stylized “M” symbol with the company name in a wordmark format, as displayed on Modine’s official website.[6]
