The American Home was a monthly magazine published in the United States from 1928 to 1977, covering domestic architecture, interior design, landscape design and gardening.[1] The publication began as a continuation of the magazine Garden & Home Builder.[1]

Design and History

In the 1960s, The American Home faced increasing competition from other home design and lifestyle publications. As a result, the magazine was redesigned in 1968 to appeal to a younger audience.[2] That same year, Curtis Publishing Company sold the magazine to Downe Communications as part of its move away from mass circulation publications.[1][3]

The 1968 redesign introduced a new format for the magazine, described in contemporary trade press as a “new, dramatic format.”[4] The magazine continued publishing until 1977, when declining readership and rising costs brought the publication to a close.[2]

While the 1968 redesign has been attributed in some sources to designer Tony Russell of the firm Russell & Hinrichs, this specific attribution could not be independently verified in available primary or archival sources. Russell & Hinrichs Associates was a graphic design office founded in New York City in 1966 by Anthony (Tony) Russell and Kit Hinrichs.[5] Russell later founded Russell Design, an award-winning design firm serving corporate and cultural clients, and became president of the American Institute of Graphic Arts.[6]

Documentation of the specific visual features of the 1968 American Home masthead, including its lettering style, spacing and construction, is limited in available sources. The magazine’s covers from the period are known for their striking design, but detailed descriptions of the logo itself are not well documented in accessible archival material.[2]
