Arnoldo Mondadori Editore, the Italian publishing house founded by Arnoldo Mondadori in 1907, has used a monogram of the founder’s initials “A” and “M” as its core trademark since the company’s early years. The current mark, codified in 1969 by Dutch designer Bob Noorda, merges those two letters into a single geometric symbol that has remained essentially unchanged for over four decades.
Design and History
In the early years of publication, the Casa Editrice Mondadori did not have a single definitive logo. The publisher initially used the founder’s initials “AM” in various forms, with designs, fonts, line weights and colors varying frequently across publications without clear rules. In 1927, a rose design with the motto “in su la cima” was introduced, and during the 1920s a palm tree motif appeared alongside the AM monogram, though its meaning remains unknown. From the 1940s onward, the publisher increasingly favored using only the initials without pictorial elements.[1]
In 1969, Mondadori announced a competition for a restyling of the logo. Bob Noorda won with a more original presentation of the founder’s letters A and M.[1] The official corporate account describes the trademark as “created by merging the initials of Arnoldo Mondadori, founder of the publishing house,” and states it was “codified in 1969 by Dutch designer Bob Noorda at the end of a lengthy process that began in the 1920s.”[2]
Noorda, who moved to Milan in 1954 and co-founded the international design agency Unimark International in 1965 with Massimo Vignelli, was responsible for numerous prominent Italian corporate identities, including those of Coop, Feltrinelli, Agip and Enel, as well as the Mondadori mark.[3][4]
In 1996, to strengthen and unify the perception of the Mondadori brand, a logotype was created, also by Bob Noorda, using an exclusive alphabet of characters derived from the lettering of the trademark. This was accompanied by a structured system of brand guidelines.[2] In 2015, the word “Group” was added to the corporate identity to unify the brand under a single corporate structure, and the historic trademark was revisited and streamlined in its proportions to serve as the base module for all variations.[1][2]
Meaning and Symbolism
The Mondadori trademark is a monogram formed by the union of the initials “A” and “M,” standing for Arnoldo Mondadori, the founder of the publishing house.[2] The symbol is described in one account as an “A” contained within an “M.”[5] The official brand page attributes the mark’s strong recognition to the wide distribution of Mondadori products and stores, the consistency of keeping the brand unchanged for over 40 years, and the positive association of the brand with publishing quality and reliability.[2]
Typography and Design
The 1996 logotype was created by Bob Noorda using an exclusive alphabet of characters drawn from the lettering of the trademark itself, rather than an existing commercial typeface.[2] The trademark may be reproduced only in the corporate colors: red for the trademark (Pantone 186 C, CMYK C0 M100 Y90 K10, RGB R210 G000 B036) and black on white or light backgrounds, or white on dark or black backgrounds, for the logotype.[2]
