Benziger Verlag was a Swiss publishing house based in Einsiedeln, with roots tracing to the late 18th century. The company operated internationally for roughly 150 years, becoming one of the largest employers in the canton of Schwyz before its Einsiedeln site closed in 1995.[1]

Design and History

The Benziger Verlag symbol was designed by the Swiss graphic designers Eugen and Max Lenz in 1950.[2] The brothers, who trained at the Kunstgewerbeschule Zürich, operated a joint graphic design studio in Zurich from 1939 to 1981.[3] Their studio produced publicity, advertising, display and poster graphics for clients including Swissair, Bally and BP.[4]

The 1950 mark was created during a period of renewal for the publisher. After near-bankruptcy in the early 1920s, the company was restructured under the Bettschart and Keckeis families, and in the postwar years the program shifted away from traditional devotional imagery toward fiction, youth literature and schoolbooks.[1] The logo accompanied this modernized publishing direction.

Meaning and Symbolism

Documented descriptions of the Benziger Verlag mark are limited. The logo is characterized as an angular design with a Switzerland-related angular shape, though no authoritative source provides a detailed account of its intended symbolism.[2] Without stronger primary documentation, any further interpretation of the mark’s meaning would be speculative.

Typography and Design

The Lenz brothers are known for designing the typeface Profil, released by Haas in 1946, which they developed from an earlier fancy type.[5] However, no source confirms that this typeface was used in the Benziger Verlag logo.
