Kossuth Kiadó (Kossuth Publishing House) is a Hungarian book publisher based in Budapest. Its predecessor, Szikra Könyvkiadó, was founded in November 1944 by the Hungarian Communist Party in Szeged, and the Szikra Kiadó adopted the Kossuth Könyvkiadó name in 1956, becoming the publisher of the Hungarian Socialist Workers’ Party (MSZMP).[1] The publisher states that it underwent a transformation in 2021 with a new publication structure aimed at younger adult audiences.[2]
Design and History
Documented visual material from the publisher’s earlier era survives mainly through printed ephemera held in museum collections. A 1978 Kossuth Könyvkiadó card calendar in the Hungarian Museum of Trade and Tourism shows three book covers published by the company, with the name “KOSSUTH KÖNYVKIADÓ” printed at the bottom of the card.[3] Another museum item, a commemorative medal from the Kossuth Könyvkiadó, depicts an open book with a Soviet star in its upper corner, with “KOSSUTH KÖNYVKIADÓ” arranged in a semicircle on the left side of the piece.[4]
A museum catalog description of a Kossuth Könyvkiadó card calendar notes a design featuring a white quill pen on a turquoise background, with a red star in the center referencing the publisher’s political affiliation, and text on both sides indicating the publishing profile, including “TÖRTÉNELEM” (history).[5]
DBpedia, which mirrors structured data from the Hungarian Wikipedia article on Kossuth Kiadó, includes an image caption identifying “Az 1984-es embléma” (the 1984 emblem), indicating that a distinct emblem was in use by 1984.[6] No further details about the designer or the visual form of that emblem are available in the research sources.
Meaning and Symbolism
Museum descriptions of its printed materials from the 1970s note the presence of a red star, described as referencing the publisher’s political party affiliation, alongside imagery such as a quill pen alluding to writers.[5] A Soviet star also appears on a commemorative medal produced by the publisher.[4]
For the current identity, no official documentation of logo symbolism, color meaning, or design rationale was found in the research sources. Brand asset aggregator Brandfetch lists colors associated with the kossuth.hu brand (including hex values #CE7C48, #FFD260, and #260413), but this source does not provide verified design intent or official brand guidelines.[7]
Typography and Design
No verified information about the typography, typeface, or construction method of the current Kossuth Kiadó logo was found in the research. A 2023 graduate thesis project by Zoltán Petra at the Budapest Metropolitan University proposed a complete visual redesign of the Kossuth Kiadó brand, including logos and supporting materials, but this was a student concept project and not an official commission by the publisher.[8]
Claims that a logo was designed by Judit Erdélyi in 1969 could not be verified in any of the research sources consulted.
