Besam-Bilim ve is a Turkish media logo attributed to graphic designer Sait Maden, dated 1994. The mark belongs to a Turkish publishing or media entity whose name combines “Bilim” (science) with “ve” (and), suggesting a bridging of scholarly content with broader media reach. However, verifiable documentation of this specific logo is extremely limited in available sources.

Design and History

Sait Maden (1931–2013) was one of the most important figures in Turkish graphic design. Between 1955 and 1960 he designed logos, billboard displays, theatre decors, and cinema posters as a side job, and after 1960 he concentrated mainly on publication design. He designed around 8,000 book and magazine covers for many publishing houses, as well as periodicals, brochures, packaging, labels, and around 500 logos. In 1964 he established his own private workshop. He was among the founders of the Graphic Artists Association in 1969, spending a period as chairman of the association.[1]

Maden collated his logo designs for his book titled “Simgeler” (Icons), published in 1990. In the preface he wrote, “Since my first award-winning icon was drawn in 1955, I have been an observer and practitioner for fifty years. In these fifty years, I have drawn hundreds of symbols.”[1] Sadık Karamustafa said of Maden, “It would be fair to say that he is the designer who brought the contemporary typographic approach to Turkish graphic design.”[1]

While the Besam-Bilim ve logo is attributed to Maden with a 1994 date, this specific mark does not appear in the readily accessible documentation of his work. His “Simgeler” book was published in 1990, four years before the attributed date of this logo, meaning the mark would fall outside the collection documented in that volume. No independent source confirming the design, its visual appearance, or its client has been located in available research.

Meaning and Symbolism

Documented meaning for the Besam-Bilim ve logo is not available in accessible sources. The name itself combines “Bilim” (science) with “ve” (and), which may suggest an intention to connect scholarly content with broader media distribution, but this interpretation cannot be verified through primary documentation. Without access to the original design brief, Maden’s archive, or the “Simgeler” volume itself, any claim about the mark’s symbolism would be speculative.

Typography and Design

Maden was known for crafting some of the fonts used in his books and for his typographic approach to Turkish graphic design.[1] He designed nearly fifty fonts over his career.[2] However, no specific typographic analysis of the Besam-Bilim ve mark has been located. Given the absence of verifiable visual documentation, any description of the logo’s letterforms, construction, or color palette would be unsubstantiated.

Researchers interested in this mark may wish to consult Maden’s “Simgeler” (1990) or the Sait Maden archive at the İSAM Library in Istanbul, which holds his articles on Turkish graphic art.[3]
