Centro Di

Centro Di is a Florentine art publishing house and bookshop founded in 1968. Its logo was created in 1968 by the Italian graphic designer AG Fronzoni.

Centro Di is a Florentine art publishing house and bookshop founded in 1968 by Ferruccio and Alessandra Marchi under the full name Centro di Documentazione Internazionale sulle arti (International Centre for Documentation on the Arts).[1] The company traces its roots to Ferruccio Marchi’s earlier publishing ventures, which began in 1965 as “Marchi editore” and became “Marchi e Bertolli” in 1967 before transforming into Centro Di the following year.[2]

Design and History

Centro Di’s visual identity is closely associated with the Italian graphic designer AG Fronzoni (1923-2002), known for his rigorous minimalist approach to typography and layout.[3] The logo, created in 1968, the same year the publishing house was founded, consists of stark black lettering with precise geometric spacing. The mark relies entirely on typographic tension rather than ornament, color or imagery, reflecting Fronzoni’s signature stripped-down aesthetic.

The publishing house itself was renowned in the 1970s and 1980s for its innovative exhibition catalogues and its diffusion of art and artists’ books.[1] Following Ferruccio Marchi’s death in 1981, his wife Alessandra Marchi Pandolfini took over the company’s management, later joined by their daughter Ginevra.[2] The company continues today under Ginevra Marchi’s direction, specializing in exhibition and museum catalogues, monographs, convention proceedings and journals in art history, architecture, archaeology, the decorative arts and restoration.[1]

Meaning and Symbolism

Fronzoni’s design philosophy, which he applied to Centro Di’s logo, was rooted in the belief that graphic design should eliminate the superfluous and reduce visual communication to its essential structure. His work for Centro Di exemplifies this approach: the wordmark carries no pictorial symbol or decorative element, relying instead on the contrast between black lettering and white space to create visual impact. This minimalist treatment aligns with the intellectual rigor associated with Italian art publishing of the period.

Typography and Design

The Centro Di logo is a typographic wordmark set in black capital letters. The precise geometric spacing between characters is characteristic of Fronzoni’s design method, which treated typography as a spatial and structural discipline rather than a purely communicative one. The absence of any secondary color or graphic device means the mark’s effectiveness depends entirely on the relationship between letterforms and the surrounding white space.
