Gökkuşağı was a monthly Turkish magazine that began publication in 1987, issued by circles around the Türkiye Birleşik Komünist Partisi (TBKP, United Communist Party of Turkey).[1] The publication’s name means “rainbow” in Turkish.

Design and History

The visual identity associated with Gökkuşağı is documented as an emblem design for “Gökkuşağı Yayıncılık” (Gökkuşağı Publishing), created in Istanbul in 1986 by Turkish graphic designer Sait Maden.[2] This attribution appears in an academic thesis that reproduces examples from Maden’s 1990 book Simgeler (Symbols), a compilation of his logo and emblem designs.[2]

Sait Maden (1931-2013) was a prominent figure in Turkish graphic design, having created around 500 logos, brochures, packaging and label designs alongside roughly 8,000 book and magazine covers.[3] He collected his logo work in Simgeler, published in 1990.[4] The Gökkuşağı Yayıncılık emblem is listed among the designs documented in that collection.[2]

While the magazine Gökkuşağı launched in 1987 and the Gökkuşağı Yayıncılık emblem dates to 1986, the available sources do not explicitly confirm that the publishing house emblem was used as the magazine’s masthead or cover logo. The connection between the two entities is implied by the shared name and close publication dates, but no source directly documents the emblem’s use on the magazine itself.

Meaning and Symbolism

Documented sources describe the design only as an “amblem tasarımı” (emblem design) for Gökkuşağı Yayıncılık.[2] No source provides a description of the emblem’s visual elements, color palette, or intended symbolism. While the name Gökkuşağı translates to “rainbow,” no research source confirms that a rainbow motif appears in the design, and any such claim would be speculative.
