Reich Verlag was a Swiss publishing house based in Luzern, best known for its terra magica series of illustrated travel and photography books. The company traces its roots to the Hanns Reich Verlag, founded in Munich in 1946, which moved to Düsseldorf in 1970 before being restructured and transferred to Luzern in 1974 under the name Reich Verlag AG.[1]
Design and History
The 1974 restructuring that created Reich Verlag AG in Luzern coincided with the publisher’s continued output of the terra magica photo-book series, which had been established under Hanns Reich in the 1950s.[2] The company operated under the Reich Verlag name in Luzern through the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, publishing titles in the terra magica series as well as standalone illustrated books.[3][4]
By the late 1990s, the imprint appeared as Belser Reich, reflecting a partnership or merger with the Stuttgart-based Belser Verlag. Books from this period are credited to “Belser Reich” in Luzern.[5] The Belser Reich Verlag AG was incorporated in Luzern on 9 October 1974, the same year as the Reich Verlag AG restructuring.[6]
Documentation of a specific logo design for Reich Verlag from 1974 is scarce. The publisher’s visual identity appeared primarily on book covers and title pages of the terra magica series, which were known as illustrated photo volumes.[2] No reliable source confirms the designer attribution to a “Rainer Fuhrmann” for a 1974 Reich Verlag logo, nor does any verifiable record describe the mark’s typographic treatment or construction.
Meaning and Symbolism
The terra magica series name, meaning “magic earth” or “magical land,” was used across the publisher’s illustrated travel books from the Munich era through the Luzern period.[2][3] Beyond this series title, no documented symbolism for a Reich Verlag logo or emblem has been found in available sources.
