RTL 7 is a Dutch television channel owned by RTL Nederland, positioned as a men’s channel with programming focused on sports, action films, crime and reality television. The channel was launched in 2005, replacing the youth-oriented Yorin. Since 1 May 2023, RTL 7 has used the unified multi-coloured RTL logo shared by all RTL Nederland channels, rather than a channel-specific mark.
Design and History
From its launch in 2005, RTL 7 used a purple colour in its logo. That changed in 2010, when the channel introduced a new logo and on-air look with black and yellow as its “club colours”. The redesign was developed by Amsterdam design agency OOQ in collaboration with RTL 7, and launched on 6 September 2010. The new identity also introduced the payoff “Meer Voor Mannen” (More for Men). At the time, programme director Peter Lubbers explained that the channel wanted to distinguish itself more strongly as a men’s channel and build RTL 7 into a strong consumer brand. The sub-brands RTL GP and RTL Voetbal also received new logos as part of the same redesign. [1] [2]
In August 2017, RTL 7’s logo received a refresh. The channel kept the logo introduced seven years earlier, but the RTL letters were now rendered in the same typeface used in the RTL 4 logo. The black-yellow colour theme was retained. [3]
On 1 May 2023, RTL Nederland introduced a unified brand identity across all its channels, including RTL 7. The multi-coloured RTL logo replaced the individual channel logos, ending RTL 7’s separate visual identity. The implementation for the Netherlands was developed with CapeRock, an Amsterdam-based brand design agency. According to RTL Nederland, the diversity of content is leading in the new identity, meaning each channel no longer has a distinctive logo. Instead, the multi-coloured RTL logo is used together with specific colour elements per channel to guide viewers and create recognisability. [4] [5]
Meaning and Symbolism
The 2023 multi-coloured RTL logo is designed to reflect the diversity of RTL’s programming and online offering. RTL Nederland stated that the logo “colours along with the content” and symbolises the variety and diversity of its programmes. The corporate artwork was developed by three Dutch designers: John Beckers, Eveline Schram and Anouk van Dijk. [5] [6]
The earlier 2010 RTL 7 logo used black and yellow, colours that one design publication noted evoked associations with rugged brands such as Caterpillar and DeWalt, fitting the channel’s masculine positioning. The designers at OOQ set the RTL name in capitals and rendered the number seven in black, a deliberate move away from the previous purple lowercase identity. [7]
