S.E.I. (Società Editrice Internazionale) is an Italian publishing house based in Turin, best known for its school textbooks. The company was officially constituted in 1908, though it traces its roots to 1859 when it was founded by Don Giovanni Bosco. It was initially named Società Anonima Internazionale per la Diffusione della Buona Stampa (SAID Buona Stampa) and adopted the name Società Editrice Internazionale in 1919.[1]

Design and History

The SEI monogram was designed in 1968 by Giorgio Maltisotto, working at the Turin agency Sitcap.[2] The agency, later known as Bussolino Sitcap Advertising & Direct, was founded in 1956 and has collaborated with major Italian publishing groups.[3]

In December 2008, during the centenary celebrations of the publishing house, a new logo was presented at the inauguration of the exhibition “Serenant et Illuminant. I grandi libri illustrati per l’infanzia della SEI (1908-2008)” held at Palazzo Barolo in Turin.[4] The exhibition was part of the initiatives for the publisher’s centenary.[4]

Meaning and Symbolism

The historical SEI mark is described as containing the concepts of “light and serenity” (luce e serenità), values that underline the educational and artistic nature of the Turin publisher’s school and leisure reading production.[5]
