Signum is an Austrian media logo from the 1970s, created by the Vienna-based design duo Egon Mark and Heinz Nevosad, who worked under the name Mark & Nevosad. The pair are documented as an Austrian designer team from Vienna, also appearing as “Teamgrafik Mark & Nevosad.”[1]

Design and History

Mark & Nevosad were active in Austrian graphic design from at least the early 1980s through the 2000s. Their portfolio included poster series for Donauland, folders for the Österreichische Buddhistische Gesellschaft, and a New-Year poster for Svoboda office furniture in Vienna.[1] In 1993, the firm was credited in the GRAPHIS LOGO 2 compendium with Heinz Nevosad serving as art director.[2] The studio continued working into the 2000s, relaunching the Kandisin brand with a new logo and design in January 2004.[3]

While the Signum mark is attributed to Mark & Nevosad from the 1970s, detailed documentation of the logo’s original construction, exact color specifications, or the specific media client it was designed for has not been preserved in accessible records. The design is described as a clean, geometric mark, consistent with the modernist approach common in Austrian corporate identity work of that decade.

Meaning and Symbolism

No official documentation has been located that explains the intended symbolism or meaning behind the Signum mark. The name “Signum” itself is Latin for “sign” or “mark,” which aligns with the logo’s function as an identifying device for a media brand, but this connection is not explicitly confirmed by primary sources.
