NPO Politiek en Nieuws is a Dutch public television channel operated by the NOS, the public broadcaster that supplies news and sports to all national public television and radio networks. The channel was launched on 15 November 2006 as one of the digital theme channels of the Dutch public broadcasting system. Its visual identity has evolved through several name changes, each accompanied by a distinct logo.
Design and History
The channel originally launched under the name Politiek 24, a name it retained until 10 March 2014, when it was renamed NPO Politiek as part of a broader NPO rebranding effort. The Politiek 24 logo was used from 2009 to 2014. On 15 December 2021, NPO Nieuws merged with NPO Politiek, and the combined channel adopted its present name, NPO Politiek en Nieuws. The merger was announced by the NOS, which noted that the NPO Nieuws channel would cease broadcasting and its programming would be absorbed into the renamed NPO Politiek en Nieuws channel. [1] [2]
In August 2014, the NPO introduced a unified NPO brand across all its radio and television channels, with new logos for all broadcasters. The eight digital theme channels, including NPO Politiek and NPO Nieuws, had already been renamed earlier that year as part of this transition. [3]
In January 2024, the NPO refreshed the visual styling of its main channels NPO 1, NPO 2, NPO 3 and NPO Start. While the channel logos themselves remained unchanged, the NPO indicated that styling updates for NPO 1 Extra, NPO 2 Extra and NPO Nieuws & Politiek would follow at a later date. [4]
Meaning and Symbolism
The channel’s visual identity is tied to the broader NPO brand system rather than a standalone emblem. As a theme channel operated by the NOS, its logo follows the NPO’s unified channel naming and branding conventions introduced in 2014, which were designed to make the public broadcaster’s programs easier to find and recognize across platforms.
