TRT Spor Yıldız is a Turkish sports television channel operated by the public broadcaster Türkiye Radyo Televizyon Kurumu (TRT). The channel was launched on 19 May 2021, replacing the test-broadcast channel TRT Spor 2, and was introduced with a new name, logo and on-screen visuals at a ceremony at the Presidential Complex in Ankara.[1]
Design and History
TRT Spor Yıldız began its life as TRT Spor 2, which started test broadcasts on 21 September 2019.[2] The channel was officially presented under its new identity on 19 May 2021, coinciding with Turkey’s Youth and Sports Day. At the launch, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan confirmed that TRT Spor 2 would continue as TRT Spor Yıldız and that the channel’s corporate identity and screen visuals had been renewed alongside its name.[3]
The channel was created as a joint project between TRT and Turkey’s Ministry of Youth and Sports, with a stated focus on Olympic and amateur sports disciplines rather than mainstream football coverage.[4] TRT Spor Kanal Koordinatörü Mehmet Buğra Şahin described the channel’s slogan as “Sporun her rengi” (Every color of sport), indicating that all branches of sport would find a place on the channel.[5]
At the launch event, Erdoğan described the channel as one that “takes its color and spirit from the Olympics” and would bring “every color of sport” to sports fans of all ages.[1] The channel’s official Twitter account described it as “Turkey’s new generation, Olympic sports channel.”[3]
Meaning and Symbolism
The TRT Spor Yıldız logo is based on the name of the TRT Spor television channel. The first part of the name appears in white and the second part in red, followed by a small star-shaped symbol with a red and white outline.[6] The star motif directly references the channel’s name, “Yıldız,” which means “star” in Turkish.
At the channel’s launch, President Erdoğan stated that the channel “takes its color and spirit from the Olympics,” linking the visual identity to the Olympic movement and its multi-colored rings.[1] The channel’s positioning as an Olympic-focused broadcaster is reinforced by its slogan “Sporun her rengi” (Every color of sport), which was cited by TRT Spor Kanal Koordinatörü Mehmet Buğra Şahin.[5]
Typography and Design
The TRT Spor Yıldız wordmark uses a bold sans-serif typeface, with some letters at the ends featuring rounded terminals.[6] The logo combines the white and red text with the star symbol positioned after the inscription. The designer or agency responsible for the logo has not been publicly identified in available sources.
