The Oceano Azul Foundation is an international ocean conservation foundation launched in 2016 and based in Portugal, founded by the dos Santos Family with a mission to protect and restore ocean health.[1] The foundation holds the concession to operate Oceanário de Lisboa, the Lisbon aquarium.[1]
Design and History
The visual identity for the Oceano Azul Foundation was designed by the New York branding firm Chermayeff & Geismar & Haviv, the same studio that created the visual identity for Oceanário de Lisboa.[2] The foundation’s mark was inspired by an element of the Oceanário’s trademark, resulting in a bold symbol that combines the image of a fish with water.[2]
The foundation’s official graphic identity guidelines describe the primary colors as a specially selected blue, referred to as Oceano Azul Blue, as well as black, which make up the symbol and wordmark colors.[3] The guidelines specify Pantone spot colors and 4/C process colors for print use, with RGB and HEX values provided for on-screen and web applications.[3] The specified Pantone color for the identity is PMS 3005.[3]
Meaning and Symbolism
The symbol combines the image of a fish with water, with waves that suggest layers or currents.[2] The identity guidelines note that the symbol alone should always appear in Oceano Azul Blue on a white background.[3]
Typography and Design
According to the foundation’s graphic identity guidelines, all text in the identity system is set in Arial or Georgia.[3] The guidelines also reference Gibson SemiBold and Arial Bold as typefaces used within specific applications of the identity.[3]
