Ishimaru refers to the visual identity of Ishimaru Denki (石丸電気), a Japanese consumer electronics retailer headquartered in Tokyo’s Akihabara district. The company was founded in 1945 and operated as Ishimaru Denki Co., Ltd. until it was absorbed by the Edion Group in February 2009.[1]

Design and History

The Ishimaru Denki symbol mark was designed in 1971 by Japanese graphic designer Ikko Tanaka (1930-2002), who is also known for creating the visual identities of Seibu Department Stores, LOFT, and Muji.[2][3] The mark remained in use from 1971 through 2009.[2]

Tanaka’s design for Ishimaru was part of a broader body of corporate symbol work that also included marks for Kyodo Sekiyu (Kyoseki) and other Japanese companies.[4]

The retailer’s long-standing image colors were red and white, which were reflected in its storefront designs and signage.[1] The original red logo mark was a distinctive element of the Ishimaru brand in Akihabara.[5]

In 2009, following the company’s absorption into the Edion Group, the Ishimaru Denki main store underwent a major renovation. The storefront, previously based on red and white, was changed to a design emphasizing blue. The logo was also replaced with a new romanized “ishimaru” wordmark accompanied by the Edion mark.[1] The old red logo was retired from the storefront, though the rooftop sign and mark were reportedly maintained for a time.[6]

Meaning and Symbolism

Tanaka’s Ishimaru mark is recognized as a simple yet memorable design that has aged without feeling dated.[3] The mark is categorized among symbols based on the Japanese character “丸” (maru, meaning circle), which also appears in the company’s name.[7] No official documentation of additional symbolic meaning has been confirmed in available sources.
