Skiroule Ltée was a Quebec-based snowmobile manufacturer founded by Réjean Houle of Wickham, Quebec, operating from the mid-1960s until its bankruptcy in 1976. After HMK acquired the line from Coleman in 1975, Skiroule branding returned to prominence on its machines.

Skiroule Ltée was a Quebec-based snowmobile manufacturer founded by Réjean Houle of Wickham, Quebec. The company name itself is a portmanteau derived from “SKI” and “Rejean hOULE,” reflecting its founder’s identity.[1] The brand operated from the mid-1960s until its bankruptcy in 1976, producing machines known for their aerodynamic styling and racing pedigree.[2]

Design and History

Skiroule’s visual identity evolved alongside its corporate ownership. From 1969, after Coleman acquired the company, Skiroule models carried the Coleman logo on their machines.[1] This arrangement continued until 1975, when the HMK (Herbert M. Karol) Manufacturing Company of Montreal, Quebec purchased the Skiroule line from Coleman.[1]

Following the HMK acquisition, Skiroule branding returned to prominence on the machines. The brand’s final production years, 1975 and 1976, saw the RTX Series III and other models released under the Skiroule name before the company went bankrupt in 1976.[1][2]

Period advertising and dealer materials from the early 1970s show the Skiroule wordmark used prominently in marketing, often paired with bold graphic treatments on the sleds themselves.[3] The brand was known for its distinctive visual approach, adopting lower hoods and aggressive styling that set it apart from more utilitarian competitors of the era.[2]

Meaning and Symbolism

The Skiroule name directly encodes the founder’s identity: “SKI” from the sport and “Rejean hOULE” from the founder’s surname.[1] This naming convention was a personal mark of the brand’s Quebec origins and its founder’s hands-on involvement in the company’s early prototype development.

Surviving dealer merchandise from the period illustrates the brand’s visual language. A circa 1970s leather suitcase used by a Skiroule dealer features teal text reading “Skiroule” across a black stripe with white edges, and a printed logo with teal and black text reading “Skiroule, Fabrique au Canada/Made in Canada.”[4] This bilingual branding emphasized the company’s Canadian manufacturing identity.

Skiroule’s design philosophy extended beyond its logo to the machines themselves. The brand was recognized for its aesthetic approach, adopting aerodynamic lines and an aggressive stance that suggested speed and modernity at a time when many snowmobiles remained highly utilitarian.[2] This visual identity was central to positioning Skiroule as a desirable performance brand.
