Polator Oy was a Finnish import/export firm whose logo, designed by Martti A. Mykkänen, was featured in the Graphis Annual 1965/66, the international yearbook of advertising art.[1] The company’s operations have since ceased, according to Finnish business registry data.[2]
Design and History
The Polator logo is documented in the Aalto University Archives as part of the Martti Mykkänen collection. The archive record describes it as a medium-sized logo board (“Logotaulu, keskikoko”) measuring 33.5 x 33.5 cm, printed on cardboard.[3] The archive attributes the work to Mykkänen as the creator.[3]
Martti Mykkänen (1926-2008) was a Finnish graphic artist, creator of posters and logos, and illustrator of book covers.[4] He studied at the Central School of Applied Arts in Helsinki, graduating in 1951, and later worked in Switzerland before starting his freelance career in 1955.[5] He was elected to the Alliance Graphique Internationale (AGI) in 1966.[5]
Meaning and Symbolism
No documented explanation of the Polator logo’s symbolism or intended meaning has been found in the available sources. The logo’s visual appearance is not described in detail in the archival record, which focuses on the physical format of the preserved logo board rather than its graphic content.[3]
