Sofia Fashion Center is the English rendering of the Bulgarian state institution “Tsentar za novite stoki i moda” (Centre for New Goods and Fashion), established in Sofia in 1960 to guide fashion trends and textile production in Bulgaria. The organization operated as a central authority for developing new fabric samples, designs and colorways, working closely with sample weaving mills to introduce coordinated fashion direction to the country’s light industry.
Design and History
The Centre for New Goods and Fashion was created by Council of Ministers Decree No. 124 of 14 May 1960, on the initiative of engineer Nesim Nesimov. It consolidated the activities of the State Fashion Centre at the Sofia City People’s Council, the sample weaving mill at the “8 March” State Industrial Enterprise in Sofia, and the Permanent Sample Pavilion at the Bulgarian Chamber of Commerce. The Centre relied heavily on the sample weaving mill, where prototypes for new fabrics, patterns and color schemes were developed.[1]
In 1967, the fashion house “Lada” Sofia was created within the framework of the Centre for New Goods and Fashion, operating under the fuller name “Tsentar za novite stoki i modata – Lada Sofia.”[2] The Centre also published the magazine “Lada,” whose first issue appeared in 1959, preceding the Centre’s formal establishment.[1]
Research into the visual identity of Sofia Fashion Center, including any mark designed by Lüdmil Mehandjiev in the 1960s, did not yield verifiable documentation. No primary or secondary source confirming the designer attribution, the logo’s creation date, or a description of the mark itself could be located in available archives. The organization’s later commercial entity, “Tsentar za novi stoki i moda – Sofia” OOD, was sold at public auction in 2008, with the company holding an office and store in Sofia and a store in Gorna Oryahovitsa.[3]
Given the absence of confirmed visual documentation, the specific appearance of the Sofia Fashion Center logo, its typography, and any official color scheme cannot be reliably described at this time.
