Bausch Health Companies Inc. is a global pharmaceutical company headquartered in Laval, Quebec, Canada, that develops and markets products in eye health, gastroenterology and dermatology.[1] The company was formerly known as Valeant Pharmaceuticals International, Inc. until its name change was completed in July 2018.[1]
Design and History
In May 2018, Valeant announced it would change its name to Bausch Health Companies Inc., effective July 2018, and would roll out a new corporate brand identity as part of the change.[2] The company stated that the Bausch name was chosen because it had been “synonymous for 165 years with innovation and an unwavering dedication to improving people’s lives,” dating back to when J.J. Bausch opened his first optical goods shop.[2] The name change was completed on July 13, 2018, with the company unveiling its new corporate brand visual identity at that time.[1]
The current Bausch Health logo is a typographic wordmark. According to the trademark filing for the mark, it consists of the word “BAUSCH” in gray, with the “H” in “BAUSCH” having an extended horizontal center that forms a cross, in the center of which is a blue square. The word “Health” follows “BAUSCH” and is blue and lowercase.[3] A separate trademark filing describes a white version of the same mark for use on dark backgrounds.[4]
Because the company’s businesses and subsidiaries had strong brand equity, all entities with separate established brands continued to operate under the corporate umbrella using their existing names.[1] This included Bausch + Lomb, which retained its own identity as a subsidiary brand.
Meaning and Symbolism
The company’s leadership described the Bausch name as embodying “the rich history of innovation, fortitude and dedication to patient health” associated with the Bausch brand legacy.[2] The name change was framed as a way to unite the company’s core businesses, subsidiaries and brands under a single corporate identity that more accurately represented the full scope of the company.[2]
Brand asset databases list the company’s primary brand colors as a cerulean blue (hex #00A1E4) and a dark gray (hex #484C4F).[5] However, no official source documents a specific symbolic meaning for these colors or for the cross-like formation of the “H” in the wordmark.
Typography and Design
The Bausch Health logo is a purely typographic wordmark with no separate icon or symbol. The design combines an uppercase gray “BAUSCH” with a lowercase blue “Health,” creating a two-tone lockup.[3] The distinctive feature of the mark is the extended horizontal crossbar of the “H” in “BAUSCH,” which contains a blue square at its center.[3]
