Bio Decision Laboratories, also known as Biodecision Laboratories, Inc., was a Pittsburgh-based contract laboratory that performed bioequivalence and clinical testing for the pharmaceutical industry. The company was founded in 1972 and operated under the alternate business name “Bio Decision Lab” in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.[1][2]

Design and History

Biodecision Laboratories filed two trademark applications with the United States Patent and Trademark Office on July 12, 1989. The first, for the word mark “BIODECISION LABORATORIES” (Serial Number 73812005), and the second, for the word mark “BIODECISION” (Serial Number 73811990), both covered “evaluation and testing of pharmaceuticals and other administrable chemicals.” Both trademarks were owned by BIODECISION LABORATORIES, INC. and were cancelled on August 26, 1996.[3][4]

The company was headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, with an address at 5900 Penn Mall in the city’s East Liberty neighborhood.[5] Biodecision Laboratories conducted clinical pharmacology studies throughout the 1970s and 1980s, with published research appearing in pharmaceutical journals as early as 1976.[6][7]

In 1990, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration found that 11 of 13 studies conducted by Biodecision Laboratories for generic drug manufacturers violated FDA regulations or standards of good laboratory practice. The company’s president, Robert Lecher, said the firm was cooperating with the FDA to verify its laboratory results.[8][9]

By the 1990s, the business was associated with Novum, a contract research organization also founded in 1972 and headquartered in Pittsburgh. The Better Business Bureau profile for Novum lists “Bio Decision Lab” as an alternate business name.[1][2]

Documentation of a specific visual logo design for Bio Decision Laboratories is limited. The company’s trademark filings from 1989 were for word marks only, not design marks, meaning the name itself was the protected identifier rather than a graphic symbol.[3][4]
