J. Ulbach & Cia. is the historical name of the Spanish pharmaceutical company now known as Uriach, a family-owned business founded in Barcelona in 1838 and active in the healthcare sector for over 185 years.[1] The company’s visual identity is closely tied to the work of Catalan graphic designer Enric Huguet Muixí (1928-2024), who collaborated with Uriach laboratories on advertising and illustration projects from the 1950s onward.[2]
Design and History
Enric Huguet founded the Glosa Graphic Studio in 1957, dedicated to pharmaceutical advertising, and his work for Uriach included both advertising campaigns and corporate identity projects.[3] In 1973, he received the Laus Award for a collection of illustrations created for the Uriach laboratories.[4]
During the 1970s, Huguet’s studio also employed designer Joan Marquès Bach, who joined in 1969 and later established his own independent studio in 1977, continuing to work for Uriach laboratories.[5] The Disseny Hub Barcelona archive, which holds Huguet’s professional collection, documents his corporate identity work for pharmaceutical and consumer health companies during this period, including projects for Uriach.[2]
The Fundación Uriach has documented the evolution of the company’s pharmaceutical advertising from 1940 to 1980 through exhibitions drawn from its archive, illustrating how the visual style of Uriach’s materials adapted to the tastes and styles of each era.[6]
Meaning and Symbolism
The company’s current brand identity, as presented by Uriach, emphasizes its heritage as a family business and its positioning in natural consumer healthcare, with the corporate structure still operating under the name Corporación J. Uriach.[1] [7]
