Design and History

Leslie Smart, also known as Leslie (Sam) Smart (1921–1998), was a British-born typographer and graphic designer who emigrated to Canada in 1954 after training at the Portsmouth School of Art.[2] He was a founder of the Typographic Designers of Canada, later renamed the Society of Graphic Designers of Canada in 1968.[3] Smart incorporated his practice as Leslie Smart and Associates in 1966, the year after the Chatelaine Home Courses logo was created.[4]

Smart’s arrival in Canada helped raise design standards and awareness of typography as an expressive element on the page.[5] The Chatelaine Home Courses mark, produced during his early years in Toronto, reflects the typographic discipline he brought to Canadian commercial design.

Meaning and Symbolism

Documented descriptions of the Chatelaine Home Courses logo indicate it incorporates a building with a ring, a visual reference to housing and shelter appropriate for a home-building brand.[1] The geometric categorization of the mark, spanning circle, square, and triangle shapes, suggests a constructed emblem built from simple forms rather than an illustrative or pictorial treatment.[1]
