Coldwell Banker is a residential real estate franchise brand founded in San Francisco in 1906, when Colbert Coldwell established Tucker, Lynch & Coldwell in the aftermath of the Great San Francisco Earthquake.[1] The brand operates through a master franchise network in 50 countries with more than 93,000 agents worldwide.[2]
Design and History
For roughly 40 years, Coldwell Banker used a rectangular logo featuring an interlocked “CB” monogram in a square alongside the full company name.[3] In March 2019, the company announced its first rebrand in four decades, a project dubbed “Project North Star,” unveiled onstage at the Generation Blue Experience conference in Las Vegas.[4] The rebranding was developed in partnership with Coldwell Banker’s longtime advertising and design agency, Siltanen & Partners.[5]
The initial logo preview featured a stylized “CB” with a star in the top right corner, replacing the long-standing rectangular design.[6] After six months of beta testing in select markets, Coldwell Banker debuted the finalized version in September 2019, which added the “Coldwell Banker” wordmark alongside the new “CB North Star” icon.[7] The company-wide rollout began in January 2020, with individual offices given up to two years to adopt the new imagery.[3]
The rebrand was positioned as a transparent process, with agents, brokers and consumers invited to participate as the logo was tested in the field before being finalized.[4] According to Chief Marketing Officer David Marine, the company wanted a logo that “truly captured the essence and power of our network,” envisioning agents and brokers as guides for clients.[5]
Meaning and Symbolism
The “CB North Star” mark carries documented symbolism tied to the brand’s positioning. According to Coldwell Banker’s announcement, the star “symbolizes the brand’s position in real estate as a consistent, reliable presence guiding us all home.”[4] The North Star also symbolizes the Coldwell Banker network itself, with agents serving as a constant guide for consumers navigating the home buying and selling process.[5]
The star was described by the company as a visual representation of the brand’s commitment to excellence, “clean and simple, yet elegant,” and “modern but still pays homage to the brand’s storied 113-year history.”[4] The finalized branding was described as emerging from six months of “testing, iterating and perfecting the new brand identity,” designed to “guide the company into a new era.”[7]
Coldwell Banker’s official color, referred to as “Classic Blue,” has remained a consistent element of the brand through the transition.[8]
